One would think that averaging close to one run an inning (0.95) would ensure a win or two. However, that is not always the case in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL).
Through two games the defending champions, the Lamigo Monkeys, have scored 18 runs but still find themselves at 0-2. How is this possible you ask yourself? Well, when you're giving up, on average, 1.5 runs an inning, then 0.95 isn’t going to cut it.
After Tuesday night’s blowout loss to the EDA Rhinos 14-7, a game in which Lamigo had leads in both the 3rd and 6th innings, it’s safe to assume that every pitcher on the roster is on notice.
During the bottom of the 6th, an inning which the Monkeys were leading 7-6, four Lamigo relievers combined to give up three singles, a hit batter, three walks, a wild pitch and a whopping seven runs. Scoring seven runs in an inning without an extra-base hit is no small task. The Lamigo management may not have been too thrilled about the performance but the 8,088 spectators on hand at Chengcing Lake Baseball Field in Kaohsiung sure enjoyed it.
The Monkeys and Rhinos will square off again this Thursday, March 24, in Kaohsiung as Lamigo will look to secure its first win of the young CPBL season.
