The first week of the 2016 CPBL season can be described in one word: WET. Nine games were scheduled, but five of them had to be postponed due to the rain. However, they did manage to play a little ball this week so let’s look at the numbers.
The Chinatrust Brothers were lucky enough to get in three games, the Lamigo Monkeys and Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions played two apiece and the EDA Rhinos only managed one game because of the conditions.
Chinatrust Brothers (1-2)
22 runs for vs. 32 against
Lin Chih Sheng 2B
After 12 years with the Lamigo Monkeys organization, infielder and national icon Lin Chih Sheng signed with the rival Chinatrust Brothers in January. In his first regular-season at-bat, Lamigo pitcher Orlando Roman plunked Lin with first base open. Lin would later come around and score and finish the day off ridiculously: 3-3, 2 HR, 6 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB. Not a bad day at the office against your former employer. Lin finished the week off in MVP fashion.
5-10, 2 HR, 7 R, 3 RBI, 12 TB
Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions (2-0)
22 runs for vs. 9 against
Pan Wu Hsiung LF
The Lions got off to a great start in 2016 collecting wins in their first two contests. It helps when your three hitter goes 4-5, HR, 4 R and RBI. Pan, the 10-year CPBL veteran, kept things stroking in his second game going 4-6 with another home run. His final numbers after two games are other-worldly.
8-11, 2 HR, 5 R, 4 RBI and 16 TB
Lamigo Monkeys (0-2)
18 runs for vs. 27 against
Chen Chun Hsiu 1B
Starting off 0-2 wasn’t what the Monkeys had hoped for to open the season but it wasn’t Chen Chun Hsiu’s fault. In the two losses, the former Cleveland Indians prospect hit .500 and slugged his first and second home runs of the campaign. He finished the soggy week as the team’s most productive batter.
5-10, 2 HR, 4 R, 2 RBI, SB and 12 TB
EDA Rhinos (1-0)
14 runs for vs. 7 against
Kao Kuo Hui LF
Having three games postponed this week really cut into the sample size for the Rhinos, but the CPBL single-season home run leader didn’t disappoint in his only game. With 39 home runs in 2015, Kao hit his first home run of 2016 in the 7th inning off Monkeys reliever Lin Guo Yu, earning him the game’s MVP.
3-4, HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, 2 BB and 8 TB
Pitcher of the week
Jair Jurrjens 7-11 Lions
In his CPBL debut, the former Atlanta Brave pitched a gem. In only 80 pitches he held the powerful Brothers lineup to four hits in six innings. The Dutch right-hander would go on to earn the win as the Lions would blow out their opponent 11-0.
6 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 2 BB and 80 TP
