American-born pitcher Jared Lansford will make his CPBL return this weekend and will see some familiar faces. However, those same faces will be his opponents as the former Lamigo Monkey is now a member of the EDA Rhinos. EDA head coach Yeh Chun Chang has said he will let the right-hander face his former club this weekend and CPBL English sources have confirmed that Lansford will start on Sunday.
The 29-year-old was signed earlier this week after the Rhinos released import pitcher Hassan Pena in order to make room for the CPBL veteran.
Last year with the Lamigo Monkeys, Lansford went 16-7 with a respectable 4.15 ERA while striking out 111 batters, walking 43 and allowing 222 hits over 178 innings. The 16 wins would tie for the league lead, a mark that was also reached by new EDA teammate Mike Loree.
The former 2005 second-round pick was also instrumental in the Monkeys' epic Taiwan Series win versus the Brothers in October. Lansford made two appearances, one start and one in relief. His relief effort in Game 6 would lead the Monkeys to victory and force a Game 7. Lansford would be credited with the win and the game MVP. He finished the series with 10 strikeouts, four walks, one earned run and only five hits allowed in 10 innings.
With the addition of the righty, the Rhinos now have four solid starters in Loree, Ni Fu Te, and Scott Richmond. Lansford will be looking to help kick start the Rhinos as they are losers of four of their last five, but have taken six games from the Monkeys this year in their eight matchups. Despite their recent struggles, the Rhinos are 12-13 and second in the league, trailing only the first-place Brothers by 5.5 games.
The son of former MLBer, AL batting champ, All-Star and world champion Carney Lansford, Jared's familiarity with the league and its players should make his integration easier. Yeh says the Californian has been training independently and his physical condition should not be a problem.
Game time for Sunday is set for 5:05 in Kaohsiung .
