As announced by president/GM Michael Pfaff of the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic league (and confirmed here), pitcher Darin Downs is heading to Taiwan and will be the newest member of the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions.
With the injury to starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens and the uncertainty that it brings, the Lions have made a move to bolster their starting pitching with the signing deadline coming at the end of next month.
Downs, a 31-year-old lefty, is a former fifth-round pick of the Chicago Cubs who has over 90 innings of major league experience from 2012 to 2014. Most recently, he has been pitching with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League. His record this year stands at 8-5 with a 3.60 ERA over 17 starts and 105 innings. He has struck out 108 batters while issuing just 22 free passes.
Downs will join other Lions foreign pitchers Bruce Billings and Dustin Crenshaw and look to help a team that sits in first place by two games and is riding a six-game winning streak. As of the time of this report, Downs is still in America and his arrival date to Taiwan is not known.
