Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions manager Kuo Tai Yuan has resigned, as reported by multiple Taiwanese news outlets. The well-respected bench boss posted a disappointing 55-65 record with the Lions of the CPBL this year. With Kuo slated to manage the Taiwanese national team in the upcoming World Baseball Classic in March, the departure from the team will give the 54-year-old skipper plenty of time to prepare and assemble a competitive roster.
Kuo said there were many reasons for the resignation, but the decision mainly came down to his team's poor performance this year. The Lions management asked him not to leave but Kuo felt that he must take responsibility. The coach also added that he he felt bad that he didn't lead the Lions to a championship but this will give him more time to focus on the World Baseball Classic.
Kuo is a familiar figure in the Taiwanese baseball community due to his local and international experience. He was a former pitcher for the Seibu Lions in the Japanese professional league (NPB) from 1985 to 1997 before coming back to Taiwan to take over the now-defunct Macoto Cobras for three seasons. The Tainan native returned to Japan in 2012 to be the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks’ pitching coach for two years before taking over the Lions at the end of the 2015 season. He was also the head coach for the underperforming Chinese Taipei squad in the 2015 Premier12 tournament. In the 322 CPBL games that Kuo has coached over four seasons, he owns a record of 148-163-11.
While no replacement has been named at this time, current bench coach, Chen Lian Hong will be in charge until a move is made.
