The Chinatrust Brothers of the Chinese Professional Baseball League shook up their coaching staff on Friday, with the most notable move being the demotion of manager Wu Fu Lien.
The move comes as a bit of a surprise as Wu has led the Brothers to some impressive numbers over the past few years. Since being appointed as bench boss halfway through the 2015 season, Wu compiled a 114-83-3 regular-season record, including two half-season championships and a berth in the Taiwan Series in each of his two seasons.
But it was his playoff failures that ultimately cost him his job. In 2015, the Brothers held a 3-1 series lead before the Lamigo Monkeys won Games 5, 6 and 7 to take the title. This past season, the Brothers blew a 2-0 series lead, allowing the EDA Rhinos to win four straight games and the league title.
Wu has one year left on his contract and will remain with the organization in 2017, touring with the farm team and promoting Chinatrust Financial’s passion for baseball.
Two of the league’s four teams are now without a head coach, as Kuo Tai Yuan stepped down as the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions’ manager in October. Interestingly enough, Kuo will serve as head coach for the Chinese Taipei National Team at the upcoming World Baseball Classic, while Wu will be his bench boss.
