The Chinatrust Brothers have resigned RHP Bruce Kern for the 2017 season, the pitcher announced on his Facebook page today. As is the norm in the CPBL, terms of the deal were not released.
Kern was initially signed out of the Atlantic League by the Brothers in early August during the 2016 season. He was released later that month, on August 27, after just two starts with the first team. His first start was cut short due to a blister problem and the righty was roughed up in his second outing.
With how competitive roster spots were for foreign pitchers last year on the Brothers rosters, it is very easy to imagine that Kern never really got over his injury and tried to pitch through the discomfort.
"I'm a competitor and I hate losing. I am very passionate about pitching. I'm always a student of the game and try to learn something each and every day. I throw a two-seam fastball, a slider, a curveball and a circle changeup. I throw everything for strikes so I mix everything. Pitching is almost like a chess game so I like to play the game with hitters." Kern told CPBL English back in August before his first CPBL start.
The 28-year-old New York native was originally a 23rd-round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2010. He reached as high as Double-A and spent 2015 and 2016 pitching for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League before coming to Taiwan in August. He threw 6.1 innings for the Brothers with an 11.37 ERA, 2.21 WHIP, six strikeouts and five walks before being released.
CPBL players usually report to camps in January to begin their training.
