- Order has been restored and all is right once again in Monkey Land. The Lamigo Monkeys pounded out 18 hits in a 14-5 thrashing of the Chinatrust Brothers in Game 2 of the 2017 CPBL Taiwan Series. With the win, the Monkeys take a 2-1 lead as the series shifts to Taichung for Game 3 on Tuesday.
- Lamigo fans waited with bated breath in the first four innings before their team would emphatically take the lead and never look back. Monkeys SP Darin Downs ran into trouble from the get-go by giving up a double to Brothers SS Wu Tung-Jung, plunking the next batter Chou Ssu-Chi (causing some excitement!), and then allowing a run to score on an errant throw by Monkeys C Yen Hung-Chun on a double steal. Fortunately, Downs would pick off Brothers RF Chan Tzu-Hsien, who walked, before number five hitter Chang Chih-Hao snuck an opposite field home run over the left field wall, giving the Brothers an early 3-0 lead.
- The Monkeys would return fire in the bottom of the first, scoring a run off of Brothers SP Orlando Roman on a single by Wang Po-Jung followed by a double by Lin Hung-Yu.
- Brothers Chang Chih-Hao would add his third RBI of the game on his second hit of the night in the top of third, driving in Chan Tzu-Hsien who reached on a double to left field. The Brothers final run would come the next inning on a two-bagger by Chou Ssu-Chi. The Brothers were otherwise held in check by Monkeys SP Darin Downs. Despite some early struggles, Downs would battle and complete six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks, good for his first postseason win.
- The offensive juggernaut of the Monkeys would awaken in the bottom of the fourth as they sent 10 men to the plate, erupting for six runs on six hits, the go-ahead run courtesy of 1B Chen Chun-Hsui. RF Lan Yin-Lun’s fourth double of the series (he would add another one in the seventh) earlier in the inning would knock Brothers SP Orlando Roman out of the game after only 3.1 innings. Roman would hit the showers after eight hits, five earned runs, and two walks. He would be relieved by eventual losing pitcher, Kuan Ta-Yuan, who would allow four more runs in the inning, capped by Monkeys 2B Kuo Yen-Wen's two-run double, making the score 8-5. Kuo would have himself a night with four hits and four RBI’s after an 0-fer the night before.
- The Monkeys would squash any sliver of hope for a Brothers Bounce Back by adding two runs each in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Everyone joined the party tonight with all nine starters getting a hit. Lan went three-for-six (two runs, three RBI), Lin went three-for-four (two runs, four RBI), and Kuo, as mentioned above, went four-for-five (one run, four RBI). Unfortunately, only one game MVP is selected, which tonight was Lin.
- The Brothers cycled through six relievers in 4.1 innings, giving up nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and four walks. Conversely, the Monkeys three relievers were good morning (Chu Chun-Hsiang), good afternoon (Wang Yueh-Lin), and good night (Chen Yu-Hsun), going nine-up-nine-down, whiffing four batters along the way.
- You could definitely sense a momentum shift in this game. The Brothers seemed a little shell-shocked and the Monkeys relieved some pressure. A day-off and heading to Taichung could not be more timely for the Brothers. There is ample veteran leadership and presence in the Brothers clubhouse so they should regroup but even at their best, it will be difficult to compete with a Monkeys team that did what it did tonight. Game 3 kicks off at 6:35 pm on Tuesday in Taichung and will feature Brothers SP Hung Chen-Yu and Monkeys SP Zack Segovia.
