In the span of one week the Uni Lions have gone from no import pitchers to filling up all three roster
spots with hurlers that have MLB experience. Albeit just one game in the majors, the newest signed
foreign pitcher is Ryan Verdugo, a 6’0” 188-lb (183 cm, 88 kg) leftie from California who made one
appearance in 2012 for the Kansas City Royals.

Since 2012, Verdugo has spent time in the Red Sox, Athletics, and Angels farm system reaching AAA
several times but never cracking the big league roster again. For the past two seasons, Verdugo has
been pitching in the Mexican League, the last with Acereros de Monclova where he went 7-1 with a
2.53 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 18 appearances (10 starts, 74.2 innings, 81 strikeouts, 17 walks).
What jumps out at you a little from his 2017 season is his 2.05 BB/9 compared to a career 3.88 BB/9,
implying the 30-year old has developed into a solid control pitcher that also gets his fair share of whiffs
(719 K’s in 693 career minor league innings). Verdugo’s fastball sits in the low-90’s to go along with a
slider and changeup and will be a nice complement to the Lions’ right-handed pitchers David Martinez
and Josh Roenicke.

going with guys that all have CPBL experience in Darin Downs, Bruce Kern, and Michael Nix.
The Brothers are bringing back Nick Additon, pried away local fan-favorite Zack Segovia from Lamigo,
and welcome newcomer Mitch Lively. That leaves the Fubon Guardians with two open spots after their
lone signing of Mike Loree. And need I remind you that former Lions Bruce Billings and Brothers ace
Bryan Woodall are still floating out there? Two spots, two pitchers, hmm….
