Lamigo Monkeys' outfielder Wang Po-Jung will play for Nippon Baseball's Nippon Ham Fighters next season. The teams held a press conference to announce Wang's signing and contract terms -- ¥ 450,000,000 over three years (roughly 127,700,000 NT) with an annual salary of about ¥ 90,000,000 during the first year.
Wang Po-Jung joined the CPBL in 2015, appeared in 378 games amassing 573 hits, 86 homers, 319 RBI, and a .386 average. Wang's collection of awards is impressive, including Rookie Of The Year and two league MVP's while helping the Monkeys win three championships. His performance allowed him to become the first player to apply as an Overseas Free Agent out of the CPBL.
The Fighters organization hopes the addition of Wang will inject new energy into the team after losing Shohei Ohtani to the MLB last season and being eliminated in the first round of the postseason. The Fighters expect him to be a middle-of-the-order hitter, making up for the vacancy left by Mexican-American player Brandon Laird.
In addition to what Wang brings to the plate, the Fighters hope that Wang will spark some economic benefits for Hokkaido by drawing Taiwanese tourists.
